  • Added: ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • Added: ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • Added: 1 tsp sugar
  • Added: 1 pinch salt
  • Added: 4 slices day-old bread, about 2 cm thick (brioche or challah or sourdough)
  • Added: 1 tbsp butter, for the pan
  • Added: Powdered sugar, to serve(optional)
  • Added: Strawberries, to serve(optional)
  • Added: Maple syrup, to serve(optional)

Method

added removed changed
  1. Added step 1:

Whisk the eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar and salt in a shallow dish until no streaks of egg white remain.

    3 min
  2. Added step 2:

Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat and melt half the butter in it.

    3 min
  3. Added step 3:

Dip each slice of bread in the egg mixture, turning once, until coated and a little soaked. Soft bread needs only a quick dip; sturdy bread can soak a few seconds longer.

    3 min
  4. Added step 4:

Fry the slices for 3–4 minutes per side until both sides are browned and the middle is cooked through. Work in two batches if needed, adding the rest of the butter. Too much heat scorches the outside before the inside sets.

    8 min
  5. Added step 5:

Serve hot, dusted with powdered sugar, with strawberries and maple syrup.
