How SouCrunch works

SouCrunch helps you decide what to cook, learn from other home cooks, and actually get dinner on the table. Here's everything in two minutes.

“What should I eat?”

Tell us how much time you have, how much hands-on effort you can face, any diets, and what's in your fridge. We rank every recipe and show you one idea at a time — with the reasons (“uses 5 of your 6 ingredients”, “ready in 25 min”) and what you'd still need to buy. Not feeling it? Tap Not this one or Surprise me.

  • Your fridge list is remembered on this device, so next time it's one tap.
  • Missing a couple of things? Send them straight to your shopping list.

Remixes, versions and family trees

Recipes on SouCrunch evolve like they do in real kitchens: someone makes a dish, someone else changes it a little, and the best ideas travel. We keep track of all of it.

Remix

Tap Remix on any recipe to get your own editable copy. Swap ingredients, rewrite steps, rename it. When you publish, it stays linked to the original — the original cook gets credit, and you get yours.

Versions

Every time a recipe is changed after publishing, the old version is kept, with a short note about what changed (“less sugar, more chili”). Open History to see them all — and restore an old one if you preferred it.

Compare

See exactly what changed between any two versions — even between a remix and its original: ingredients added, removed or changed, and steps with the edited words highlighted.

Family tree

Every remix of a dish, generation after generation, on one page — with what each cook changed. A great way to find the version that suits you.

Suggestions

Improved someone's recipe? From your remix, tap Suggest your changes to the original. The original cook sees the exact differences and can merge them with one click.

Merging

Merging copies the suggested ingredients and steps into your recipe as a new version (your title, description and photo stay). Nothing is lost — the previous version is still in History.

Cook mode and the smart plan

Every step knows how long it takes and whether it needs your hands (chopping, stirring) or runs by itself (the oven, a simmering pot, dough rising). So instead of doing steps one after another, cook mode tells you what to do while things cook:

While the oven preheats (8:12 left), chop the vegetables.

Here's the plan for a simple traybake — the striped bars run in the background:

Smart cooking plan

42 min total · 15 min hands-on· saves 13 min vs. one-by-one

  1. 1
    Preheat the oven to 220°C
  2. 2
    Chop the vegetables
  3. 4
    Make the dressing
  4. 3
    Roast the vegetables
  5. 5
    Toss everything together and serve
Hands-on Hands-off — do something else meanwhile
  • Run as many timers as you like. They keep counting even if your phone locks or you refresh.
  • When a timer ends you get a sound, a vibration and a notification — allow notifications when asked.
  • Turn on “Keep screen on” in cook mode so your phone doesn't dim with floury hands.

Writing a recipe people love to cook

  • Paste instead of typing. Both the ingredient list and the steps have a Paste option — one item per line, and we split amounts, units and notes for you. A line ending in “:” starts a section (“For the sauce:”).
  • Amounts are numbers. Write 2, 1.5, ½ or 1 1/2 so amounts scale with the servings. “A pinch” and “to taste” are understood too.
  • Say how long steps take. “Bake for 25 minutes” is detected automatically; Detect timings fills in the rest.
  • Mark hands-off steps (baking, simmering, resting) and steps that can start right away — that's what unlocks the smart plan. Steps that begin with “Meanwhile…” are linked up for you.
  • Drafts are private. Save as often as you like; nobody sees your recipe until you publish it.

A little recognition for sharing

Contribution badges describe what a cook has shared publicly on SouCrunch. They are not a rating of cooking skill or a verification of a recipe.

Recipe shared
At least one published, available recipe or remix.
Remix cook
At least one published, available remix.
Five dishes cooked
Cook logs on at least five different published, available recipes.
Cookbook keeper
At least one public cookbook containing three or more published, available recipes.

Badges update from currently available public content. Drafts, private cookbooks and removed recipes do not count. Multiple cook logs on the same recipe count as one dish. If a qualifying contribution becomes unavailable, its badge can disappear. There are no points or rankings.

Frequently asked questions

Is SouCrunch free?
Yes — sharing, remixing, cooking and everything else.
Who can see my drafts?
Only you. A recipe becomes public when you publish it.
Someone remixed my recipe — is that okay?
That's the idea! Their version always links back to yours, and it shows up in your recipe's family tree. If they improve something, they can suggest it to you — you decide whether to merge.
What if I delete a recipe that others remixed?
Their remixes stay up. In the family tree your recipe shows as a deleted placeholder so the history still makes sense.
I merged a suggestion and changed my mind.
Open your recipe's History and restore the version from before the merge. Every version is kept.
Can I change servings or units?
Yes. Use the servings buttons on any recipe (amounts scale automatically) and switch between metric and US units.
